It's not quite perfect, but improved looks aren't all the new CR-V has to offer.
Neither the beloved Civic nor the long-lived Accord qualify as Honda's best-selling vehicle. That honor belongs to him.Honda CR-Vcompact crossover. For 2023, however, the CR-V has evolved dramatically and isn't quite as compact anymore. It's still not registered as a full-size unit, but it's longer and wider, opening up enough cabin space for the CR-V to easily fit taller teens in the back.
It also takes a leap forward in design, toning down the quirkiness of the previous two generations that put off some buyers, and a whole new approach to powertrains that puts hybrid performance front and center. We were impressed with oursFirst drive of the new CR-V, but it's not until a full week of driving a new car that we can discover a car's true character and utility. In this case, Honda loaned us a high-end hybrid CR-V Sport Touring.
Powertrain: The name is sport, the game is efficiency
Let's start with the drive train, because this characterizes the models. The LX, EX and EX-L models are gas-only, while the Sport and Sport Touring are hybrid options. Both the Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid are at the top of the CR-V lineup, using a 2.0-liter inline-four engine with a two-motor hybrid system. Non-hybrids use the same engine but trade the electric assist for a turbocharger. Gasoline models make 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque, while hybrids have a combined output of 204 horsepower.
The Sport Touring comes with all-wheel drive only, while the Sport Hybrid below can choose to drive two wheels or all four. Both get Honda's continuously variable transmission (CVT), which includes a new snow and hill descent mode for slippery conditions. It also has a Sport mode that sharpens throttle response, but we didn't feel the need to use it after seeing how it works.
Honda has worked hard to refine the engine and make it quieter, and for the most part it has been successful. Hybrid models also get good gas mileage numbers. In the all-wheel-drive spec, EPA estimates are 40/34/37 mpg city/highway/combined. We did, however, capture a 38mpg display with combined driving that included quite a bit of uphill and downhill driving, which is pretty impressive.
Exterior: no more gradients
The curved and pointed design of the CR-V is gone, replaced by a more refined frame or, depending on your taste, a softer body. The Sport Touring trim adds a lot to the exterior over the lower stair trims. The 19-inch Berlina Black alloy wheels stand out, while gloss black accents on elements such as the grille, spoiler and mirrors add a bit of understatement and sophistication.
It also adds a gray rear lower bumper with stainless steel rear exhaust tips and black roof rails on top. Up front is a platinum-colored lower front bumper, and back to the rear, the Sport Touring has a power liftgate with hands-free access.
Interior: space and comfort
Inside the new CR-V there's a lot to like, consistent with the brand's new cross-divisional interior design language, most notably the dashboard-wide honeycomb ventilation. The Sport Touring also adds black leather sport seats with orange or gray stitching and a heated leather steering wheel. The doors and the footwell are supplemented by ambient lighting.
Rear legroom, which will happily fit a couple of tall adults, is the highlight, but so is the comfort of the front seats and all-round visibility offered by new B-pillar placement and plenty of glass. The driver's seating position has been refined and designed for long-term comfort, which we can now confirm. The new multifunctional shelf in the center console is thoughtful and useful, as is the rest of the interior: there are ample cup holders and storage compartments.
In addition to the 9-inch infotainment screen that offers all the basics plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Sport Touring also gets a 12-speaker Bose sound system with a subwoofer, which is made by Bose and underwhelming in quality is, but not its power. Mobile phone charging is added in addition to WiFi hotspot capability and satellite navigation, and you get three USB-C ports for charging throughout the cabin.
As for safety, the EX-L and Sport Touring have low-speed brake control, a first on the CR-V, and blind-spot monitoring as standard, in addition to the standard and already comprehensive Honda Sensing safety suite. with cross traffic warning. .
On the go: comfort, but little go
We've gained a lot of experience with CR-V over the years and this generation is a big step forward in many ways. The suspension is the plushest yet, the ride is smooth (something Honda hasn't mastered in the past), and there's a lot less drivetrain vibration than before. It's a quiet, smooth ride for the most part, with natural, direct steering. The drive train impresses with its smooth running and economy and is well recommended as a city, town and highway vehicle in its entirety.
There's a "but" though, and so the CVT tends to rev the engine more than it should, and it sounds odd. It happens occasionally on the flat, but is particularly noticeable when high-revving engine noise is pushed into the cabin when driving uphill; other vehicles would have lowered the speed. Seems to be a programming issue in the unnecessary linear shift control system that creates "steps" to mimic a conventional transmission.
Off the line, the CR-V Sport Touring is fairly quick, easily hitting freeway speeds on the ramp. There's little headroom on the power curve for passing slower traffic, so be prepared to pick up the speed of the car in front when navigating winding roads.
On those windy roads, the new CR-V is a joy to drive, despite being underpowered at times. We call it "closer to the German idea of sporty comfort," and we stand by that. It justifies the Touring part of the trim name, and coupled with the fuel economy and extra space, the Sport Touring will make a more comfortable holiday and weekend ride than previous versions, but perform just as well as a more familiar everyday one. .
Should I buy or upgrade?
If you love your CR-V, are a generation or more behind it and have a lot of miles on it, then the new CR-V is a great upgrade. Though a bit pricey for a compact crossover at $39,100, the Sport Touring Hybrid justifies its top billing in the class tree and is packed with features and amenities.
The powertrain needs some revisions on its schedule and hopefully Honda will recognize that and fix it with a software update. It's not a deal breaker though, especially if you don't drive a lot of long hills, as it ticks a lot of boxes for cars in that particular segment. The CR-V has swung against competitors like the Evergreentoyota rav4.
However, we'd like to see a front-wheel drive option for the top-of-the-line version to bring the price down for those who simply don't need an all-wheel drive vehicle. It would also add two to three miles to the gallon over the Sport Touring, since the Sport trim makes it, and add an extra three miles now that gas prices have seemingly been permanently on the rise.
